Call to Artists. Windows of Understanding. We See Through Hate.

The vision for this public art project is to transform our “main street” spaces into literal windows of understanding; spaces in which the community can learn about the positive strides being made by local organizations around a wide array of social justice issues that don’t make daily headlines. Windows of Understanding is a creative, community-building response to the negativity and hate being perpetuated in today’s media landscape. Our belief is that through visual language, artists can communicate methods of understanding in powerful ways that cut across cultural boundaries..

Windows of Understanding is seeking artists to be paired with organizations to create site specific works of public art around the broad theme of BUILDING A HEALTHY COMMUNITY: This includes Mental Health; Violence Prevention; Food Equity; and Women’s Health. Artists from across the state, representing a wide range of philosophies and mediums are encouraged to apply. The 2023 season will run from Jan 16-April 1.

Each artist will be paired with a local organization working on the above issues they care about. An honorarium will be provided to each artist for their work, as well as a stipend for art materials to support their window intervention. All participating artists will attend an Artist Facilitator training that will cover project goals and community- based art practices. A detailed timeline will be provided to all participants.

TO APPLY: Apply by August 12 via submission form and providing 5-8 examples of your art.
